Perspective : The Sashimi Lesson
I saw a quote about perspective. Can't remember much but something sounded like:
'If you like to complain, then you'll be given with a lot of things to complain about. Likewise, if you like to compliment, you'll be seeing things to compliment about'.
I saw that while scrolling my FB. It somehow triggered me to my IG Story post few minutes earlier, complaining about the place I had my lunch at where the services were bad and the food was incomplete. Now, I started to remember the hours before I had my lunch where I mumbled about something and someone out of the blue.
Ah, I complained a lot today. And it'll keep coming if I didn't stop complaining. Right?
Perspective is the way we see at things and process it inside the mind to become either good or bad. If we choose to digest it as something negative, it will somehow become negative in our own perspective. Your view may be different from others but you are not wrong to have that opinion too. However, if you try change it to something more positive, you may avoid yourself from taking side in any specific situation.
Okay, let me stimulate my lunch situation just now at a Japanese café.
Situation:
I ordered 3 items where 1 of it was a set of Sashimi (Salmon, Tuna & Butterfish). About 30 minutes later, my first order arrived. It was good. Then, there was my sashimi, came with a message that they replaced my butterfish with salmon. So, the sashimi isn't complete. Later, after an hour of my visit there, I have not received my 3rd order. At the same time, I keep on seeing small cockroaches messing around at my table. Maybe they can sense that I HATE COCKROACH and scared of 'em. But well, little did they know that I'm not scared of small roaches. They are tiny by the way 😒.
So I called the waitress asking for my 3rd order. If they forgot to prepare it, I wanna cancel it. She got back to me saying that they are preparing it but it's gonna take another 10 to 15 minutes. So I chose to cancel and pay the rest of the menu. Few seconds later, she came back with my order. What? I thought I heard you said 10 to 15 minutes? I mean...
Never mind, I was off but still under control. So, I decided to pack it to go. At the same time, I show them the dead roaches on the table but she only gave me her smile. Not even a sorry. Upon paying, I told the cashier that my sashimi was not complete but they replaced it with salmon. She was good, she apologized and gave me a 10% discount. I paid and that's it.
Perspective 1: Not good at all
1) The services are totally suck. I've never waited that long for a simple menu. Besides, the place was not even crowded.
2) Cockroaches everywhere. I even saw it under someone's table. It means that they failed their cleanliness. They should do something about the roaches before someone started to complain. Oh, I did complained but they replied it with a smile. I wonder how a smile can kill those roaches. I'm the one killing 'em on my table.
3) Sashimi went wrong. The tuna was not up to my expectation. Salmon was okay. The butterhead fish was missing in action. They did not inform me upfront. If they did, I may change my menu. Again, it's the service.
4) The 3rd order was not prepared until I chose to cancel it. I have to cancel because I've been waited for almost and hour, and saw other table got their order earlier than me. I got my justification there.
From this 4 main points, I chose to post in my IG Story about the cafe and plan to ban it. That's gonna be my last visit.
Perspective 2: At least the cashier said sorry
1) About their service: The waitress greeted me at the entrance. She served me drink within 5 minutes. They attended to my enquiries.
2) The cashier was aware about my sashimi order and offered me discount. She even apologize for the hiccup.
3) The soft shell crab roll was good, no doubt.
I only have 3 good points to forgive them but since the cashier was polite, I should at least mellow down my negative perspective towards something more tolerable.
Summary
I should choose the Perspective number 2 and forgive them.
Okay, what did I do before I write this post? I was surrounded by only the negative situation that influenced me to ban the cafe (maybe forever). I shared it to my IG story so that others will be aware of the service and cleanliness.
But did I told the staff in the cafe before I choose to post? Yes, I did. I did my part because I want to ensure that they are aware. I was not even being dramatic. I told them politely. Well, I can be dramatic you know, especially when it involves food and services. 😅
My sharing through the social media may create another bad perspective from those reading it. They may avoid going there. They may not even visit other branches too, especially when there are so many delicious Japanese Cafe available to choose from. This will create a bad rapport towards the business, which may be affecting their sales, which may lead to retrenchment of staff and will somehow increase the number of unemployment. My oh my. Look at the spillover effect.
Maybe, I should on the other hand told the manager or complain it through the right platform. I don't know. I did something from one perspective and then while having a cup of good coffee, I revisited the situation and have a deep thought about it which created another angle of perspective.
What I'm trying to say is this is what's happening in our life. We only see things through our eyes but we are expecting people to see it the way we did. No way it's gonna work. What make us think that other people's opinion was wrong? They see it through their point of view, not yours.
So, guys...before you try to change someone or something according to your way or perspective, stimulate the outcome. You can choose to think 100% negative about something, or you can also try to find the good part of it and balance your thought.
Do not let yourself be surrounded with a lot of negative vibes because you are going to end up living an unhappy pathetic life. I mean we. Lesson for me too.
